The One Who Knows the Sound

The next time someone tells you something, listen for one minute longer than you normally would. Do not answer yet. Just stay.

In old China there was a man who played a stringed instrument, and one man who really heard him. When he played about mountains, his friend saw mountains. When he played about water, his friend saw water. When that friend died, the musician cut the strings and never played again.

We say we want to be heard. Usually we mean agreed with. Those are not the same thing — and it is the first one that is rare.

Who hears what you actually mean, and not what you said?

Being understood by one person is not a small thing. It is most of it.
