The Story You Made Up

The next time somebody does not answer you, stop at the last thing you actually know. They have not answered. That is the whole fact.

There was a teacher who answered almost every question with the same three words: stop making things up. People asked him about enlightenment, about the mind, about how to live. Same three words.

He was not telling anyone to stop thinking. The word he used means the invented part — the version of events you build out of one unanswered message, a look, a short reply. The facts of today were probably fine. It is the story you wrapped around them that kept you awake.

What did you decide somebody meant today, without asking them?

Most of what hurt today, you wrote yourself.
