The Counting Man

Before today is over, count one thing you cannot keep. The light on your way home. A joke that landed. Ten seconds where nothing was wrong. Count it once, then let it go.

There is an old idea from the Japanese tea room: one lifetime, one meeting. Whoever you sit with today, you will never sit with in exactly this way again. Not because something bad is coming. Just because today only happens once.

There was a man who counted everything he owned. Twice a day, to be sure. He never counted a single evening.

What happened today that will not happen again?

He counted everything he owned — but never once counted the moments that made him feel alive.
